2018 Adam Smith Chile Conference

Dear Friends,
The deadline for abstract submissions for the upcoming January 2018 Adam Smith Chile Conference has been extended to September 22, 2017. Applications received before the original deadline are receiving priority consideration, but we would like to provide another opportunity for those who may have missed the original invitation during summer holidays.
A diverse and distinguished group of Smith scholars will gather in Chile. Deirdre McCloskey will be our first keynote speaker with her lecture entitled “Smith the Non-Utopian vs. His Followers since 1848.” Additional plenary lectures will be delivered by Samuel Fleischacker, speaking on «Empathy and Perspective: A Smithian Conception of Humanity,» and James Otteson, addressing “Adam Smith’s Libertarian Paternalism.» Other prominent academics who will attend and present papers include María Alejandra Carrasco, Fonna Forman, Christel Fricke, Leonidas Montes, Maria Pia Paganelli, Sandra Peart, Dennis Rasmussen, Craig Smith, Barry Weingast, and Jeffrey Young.
While submissions in English are certainly welcome, Spanish speaking academics are particularly invited to apply given the location of the conference and its special, though non-exclusive, focus on Smith’s reception in Latin America; several sessions at least will be conducted in Spanish. Young scholars should also know that the Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez has a limited number of competitive grants available (of $1,000 USD each) to support their attendance. These are open to all, though some preference will be given to scholars from Latin America. To be considered for these grants applicants need only note as much in their proposal email, or alternatively can directly contact carolina.aplablazam@uai.cl to apply.

Algunas reflexiones del viaje a Hong Kong
La semana pasada tuve la oportunidad de estar en Hong Kong. En esta ocasión en la reunion general de la Mont Pelerin Society. Aquí se puede acceder al programa completo. John Taylor, Kevin Murphy, William Easterly, Diedre McCloskey, Pddro Schwartz, Scot Sumner y Luigi Zingales fueron algunos de los conferencistas que más se destacaron.
Nuevo Journal «Review of Behavioral Economics» (ROBE)
Barkley Rosser ha abierto un nuevo journal de economía bajo el título «Review of Behavioral Economics» o brevemente «ROBE». Pienso que los lectores de este blog deberían tener presente este journal para intentar publicar el fruto de sus investigaciones.
«The journal is open to a variety of approaches and methods, both mainstream and non-orthodox, as well as theoretical, empirical, and narrative.»
Esta es una importante señal de ROBE para con los que defendemos un enfoque heterodoxo. Barkley fue editor de JEBO por muchos años, y durante ese tiempo el journal creció en los rankings volviéndose más heterodoxo.
En el board editorial aparecen George Akerlof, Deidre McCloskey y Vernon Smith. Entre los editores asociados están incluidos Catherine Eckel, Geoff Hodgson, Cars Hommes, Timur Kuran, Bart Wilson, David Sloan Wilson y Roger Koppl.
El Empirismo de la Escuela Austriaca de Economía
El boom inmobiliario y la posterior crisis financiera, la recesión y la débil recuperación, así como la candidatura presidencial de Ron Paul han expuesto a la Escuela Austriaca de Economía a la luz pública, concretamente en la clase intelectual dentro de la prensa y el internet. Este incremento en la atención también ha significado un incremento en la crítica. Una acusación recurrente es que la Escuela Austriaca es radicalmente anti-empírica y poco le importa contrastar sus teorías con la realidad del mundo.
